Stable Home: Life with Two Horses

March 3, 2016 - March 5, 2016

habib_poster_02

March 3rd to 5th at 8pm
Matinee March 5th at 2pm

This 90-minute show makes fun of the whole family! From skipping class to stifling heartbreak, the audience will travel from open fields to late night car rides with this fun-loving but erratic mother-son duo. Once you hear the stories of actress/writer/filmmaker Ruth Lawrence and her stand-up comic son Luke – both born in a Year of the Horse – we suspect you’ll probably feel pretty good about your own upbringing. Some of their stories will be hard to believe. Heck, they can’t even believe each other!

Ever wanted to do Stand-up comedy. Attend a workshop with Ruth & Luke Lawrence, Stand Up and Performance – A Practical Workshop, on Wednesday March 2, 2016 6-7pm. Free admission with the purchase of ticket to the show. Must RSVP as capacity is limited.

Mack Furlong, Christine Taylor, Luke Lawrence and David Banfield in conversation.

On March 4 following the 8pm performance of the comedy Stable Home: A Life with Two Horses at the LSPU, we invite you to join host and moderator Mack Furlong as he talks to artist/activist Christine Taylor (Victoria BC), comedian Luke Lawrence (St. John’s) and Executive Director of the LDANL, David Banfield (St. John’s.)  The conversation tackles how Luke and Christine discovered their LD and how their relationship with LD has evolved, how to describe it, how it feels and works.  What tools help them adapt to LD and what advantages does LD give them when they write, act and make other creative work.

You won’t want to miss Stable Home: Life with Two Horses – a 90 minute wild, brutally honest and hilarious unfolding of stories of a true relationship between a mother and son, created and performed by Ruth Lawrence and Luke Lawrence, directed by Lois Brown and presented by RCA at 8pm, but be sure to stay for the free moderated conversation.  For further information email info@newfoundlandartistx.ca

NAX joins forces with White Rooster to present another in its series of Pop-Community Conversations.  Admission is free.

Mack Furlong is a musician, actor, and writer working as a freelance artist in St. John’s. He co-created and co-wrote CBC’s cult classics The Great Eastern, Sunny Days and Nights, and Town Beat!, performing the role of Paul Moth in all three. In 2014, Mack was presented with the John Drainie Award for significant contributions to broadcasting in Canada.

Luke Lawrence is often described as an edgy comic with a high-energy persona. His raw and unfiltered stories offer an affectionate glimpse into the underworld of contemporary pop culture. He has headlined shows across the country and opened for Frankie “Trixx” Agyemang, Randy & Lahey of Trailer Park Boys, Tex Eknes, Griff Dewaine, Mike Rita, Chris Locke, George Price, John Sheehan, and Matt Wright.  He has performed in comedy clubs in Canada and the US including Jon Lovitz’ Comedy Club in Los Angeles and New York’s Comedy Cabaret.  Based on his idea, he co-wrote and co-starred in the comedy webseries, Buy The Boards. His solo show was presented at the Atlantic Fringe Festival alongside Matt Wright.  He co-wrote and performs in Stable Home: Life with Two Horses, to be remounted at the LSPU Hall in March 2016.

Receiving a diagnosis of dyslexia and scoptic sensitivity after high school, interdisciplinary artist Christine Taylor Fearing pursued an experiential education through writing, theater, documentary filmmaking, and the queer community including the queer fetish and activist community.  In 1986 at the age of 16, she co-founded a comedy troupe with some of Canada’s current leading comedians and television personalities. In 1989, she wrote and stared in a critically acclaimed play that explored the myth of female sexuality within the confines of Canadian church, state, and middle-class society. This acclaim launched her onto the international stage where she continued to explore women-centered comedy, writing, and dramaturgy focusing on themes of sexuality, gender identity, and religion. Her work with Penn and Teller in Las Vegas, Circus Oz of Australia, Madonna at the Kit Kat Klub in New York and the Chieftains at Lincoln Center in New York has been featured in Playboy, Maxim Magazine, and on SPIKE TV. Currently, her Master of Arts thesis, a play entitled Fear of Flowers, developed with White Rooster (Lois Brown, Andy Jones, Jillian Keiley, Sherry White, and Ruth Lawrence) will debut in 2017 and deals with fear of death, female middle age, and examines modern day angst in a consumer-driven society.

David Banfield has spent the past 15 years working in Education and Community based programs in St. John’s and outside the country.  Currently, David is the Executive Director of the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.  David is also heavily involved in several community projects including the Vibrant Communities Organization as a well as the Coalition for Educational Opportunities. As Executive Director, David is responsible for carrying out the vision of the Board of Directors and ensuring the needs of our members are met.  In addition, David also carries out a variety of direct to client services including assistive technology assessments, professional development and advocacy services for individuals with learning disabilities and those who support them.
