WRITER/DIRECTOR: Martine Blue
PRODUCER: Paul Pope, Ruth Lawrence, and Heidi Wagner
RUNTIME: 1hr 34min
COUNTRY: Canada/NL
SYNOPSIS: Some kids grow up in the suburbs; others on the streets. This ambitious debut feature by Burin-based Martine Blue tracks the latter, as a 15-year-old Bernice seeks alternatives to her cloistered ordinariness. But be careful what you wish for. Bernice’s journey takes her deep into gutter punk subculture, a self-contained world of ratty hair, tattoos, and body piercings. It’s not a pretty picture, but then we are often seduced by the darker sides of our nature. Although the director has admitted the film draws on many of her personal experiences, we can’t help but see Pignut as antidote to our tourist ads. This is an urban landscape lacking clotheslines, quilts, and hyper blue skies, lacking sunny-faced children and inviting bistros. Here is what one might well describe as the darker side of big oil, where life on the margins is active resistance to the dominant narrative of the “haves.” This is a bold move for a woman named Blue and we heartily applaud the sheer gutsiness of it all.
