September 29, 2016

3bysbench1September 29th, 8pm

Combining material, both traditional and contemporary, from our traditions and beyond, Matthew Byrne, Fergus, O’ Byrne, and Jim Payne represent over 40 years of  popular folk music in Newfoundland and Labrador. Now they are combining their efforts for an incredible evening of story and song.

Matthew Byrne was born into a family of Newfoundland music makers and his repertoire is heavily influenced by this unique musical lineage. This tradition that thrives on the song – the weaving of a great story with a beautiful melody – and Matthew’s music reminds us how satisfying traditional songs can be when stripped down to these basic elements. His repertoire transcends time and place with traditional songs from both sides of the Atlantic. His album Hearts & Heroes won the Canadian Folk Music Award for Traditional Album of The Year.

Two of Newfoundland’s most respected and multi-award winning performers, Jim Payne & Fergus O’Byrne combine instrumental prowess and humorous repartee, to cover a broad spectrum of Newfoundland folk culture, including songs, stories and dance tunes. Their repertoire includes rousing sea shanties and work songs, poignant ballads, comic ditties, folk tales and recitations, and toe-tapping jigs, reels and polkas on a variety of instruments. Fergus is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Folk Arts Society and Jim was recently inducted into the ArtsNL Hall of Honour.
